Why vote?
It is realistic to say most volunteers on our team are mainly motivated by the reward of organising a great multi-cultural event. Broadly speaking however, there is a political drive also. We hope to challenge racism, by bringing people from different cultures together. Music and food are great levellers. When people from different backgrounds get chatting at our events, barriers and ignorance between them can reduce.
Why is a Love Music Hate Racism event political? Traditionally members of 'far right' or fascist organisations capitalise on the fear and ignorance people may have about residents who are different in some way to the mainstream. That could mean people with a different belief system or religion, language, sexual preference, ethnic background, even a medical condition or disability. Looking back at the record of fascist organisations, on the surface they often have popular appeal, even for people in minority groups. We recommend that people look under the surface before voting for the BNP or other far right political parties. We don't care who you vote for, just vote, but not for any party with links to fascism.
The BNP may look respectable on the surface and their literature promotes the kind of political objectives many people would welcome. Behind the facade they are a sinister group of people. Sure many mainstream political parties could be accused of having sinister motives, however the BNP have a history of; racial hatred, violence, praising Adolf Hitler, Nazi holocaust denial and terrorism. These links may not be old, and there are other far right contenders for votes, but it is easy to find evidence of endemic racism within the BNP and other emerging far right parties.
Search the net for yourself, there is no shortage of damning evidence published. If you want to stop the Nazi menace, you have to get out and vote for a party without a toxic link to fascists and racists. Turning your head and waiting for them to go away may be a mistake you regret.
