About us
The 'Love Music Hate Racism - Medway' team use the positive energy of the Medway music scene and the dedicated efforts of creative and innovative volunteers to fight back against racism.
Our music events are living testimony to the fact that cultures can and do mix. Music unites us and gives us strength, it offers a vibrant celebration of our multicultural and multiracial society. Racism seeks only to divide and weaken us. Love Music Hate Racism (LMHR) was set up in 2002 in response to rising levels of racism and electoral successes for the Nazi British National Party (BNP). We use the energy of our local, national and international music scene to celebrate diversity and bring people together. In doing so barriers between people with different backgrounds break down. This weakens opportunities for fascist organisations to exploit fear, ignorance and negative feelings between different ethnic, religious or frequently marginalised groups.
Nationally LMHR has helped create awareness to mobilise people against fascist organisations to prevent their election victories. In the tradition of the Rock Against Racism (RAR) movement of the late 1970s. Nationwide there have now been over 400 LMHR events, from large outdoor festivals to local gigs and club nights.
Medway's LMHR team started in early 2007 when six like minded people got together to organise a free music festival with the hope of creating a sense of "unity in the community". With little cash but masses of positive energy and determination they called on Medway's talented artists, musicians and community groups to give their free time in support of the festival. Artists including: Lupen Crook, Rebel Control, 3 Mix, The Long Weekend, Mecca 2 Medina, Teressa Edwards, The Singing Loins, Jahson, The Jazz Faction, Panic Plan, The Car Thieves, Delayed Experience, Wasi, Pirates & Indians, Juice, Eskimo, Matthew Crane, Usifu Jalloh, Jades Street Dancer's, NXG Project and many more provided fantastic entertainment at LMHR gigs over the past four years.
We are very fortunate to have had support from Medway Council, Sunlight Development Trust, Local Trade Unions, The Royal Air Force, Councillors from the three main political parties, local businesses and residents.
We have successfully organised five festivals and several smaller events providing talks, education and entertainment. We won a 'Pride in Medway' award for our volunteer efforts. We don't 'own' Love Music Hate Racism. We want you to get involved and organise an event to help reduce isolation, ignorance and racism in the local area. We will help you if you have any energy and ideas.
We want to create a national movement against racism and fascism through music and other areas of culture such as food, fashion, drama, and art. We look forward to seeing you at one of our our events.
